Café De Suan Dok, Chiang Rai

Café De Suan Dok, a great little restaurant in Chiang Rai

Moving up to Chiang Rai meant that we left all our favorite cafes and restaurants behind in our old home town of Chiang Mai, so when we found Café De Suan Dok just a 20 minute drive from our house we were delighted.

Café De Suan Dok is a rustic family run wooden restaurant on the borders of a fishing lake.  We have frequented this restaurant many times already for lunch or a coffee on our way to and from town and we have never been disappointed.

The food served is of a high standard, the steaks with salad are very nice, especially the pork with spicy Thai sauce.

As well as meaty steaks there is also a selection of salads, fries, and omelets cooked on banana leaves, among other dishes.

One of the things that we first noticed about this restaurant is the friendliness of the staff and the quirky fact that each drink brought out to you is placed on top of a fresh leaf.  Just little gestures like that make this café stand out from the others.

The menu is both written in English and Thai and as well as the food they have an amazing selection of beverages.  It is here that we found quite possibly the cheapest Irish coffee ever at just 50 baht, seeing as other establishments charge well into the hundreds for one of these, we had to order two in one sitting and it was rather a nice treat!

Now most people will know we are not big drinkers, but an Irish coffee just happens to be one of my drinks of choice of the alcoholic variety.

There is a great selection of blended drinks and Frappuccino’s as well as sodas and all your regular coffee types.

Also there is a small selection of desserts, depending on the availability, you may find some cakes in the fridge, a coffee jelly or chocolate mousse to sweeten up after your meal or accompany your coffee.

The setting of Café De Suan Dok is charming, even in the rain watching the ripples on the lake as we ate our lunch, we felt we could spend a full afternoon here just chilling out and chatting over good food and drinks.

Nice location of Cafe de Suan Dok

This café is a locals hang out, each time we have been in here, we have been the only foreigners, for somewhere so nice with such a good, affordable menu and range of alcoholic drinks, more people should know about this wooden café on the water!

It is located on the 1211 road, one of the main roads leading into town, the café is near to Singha Park, which is also a recommended place to visit!

Café De Suan Dok is well worth seeking out for an enjoyable lunch or dinner in Chiang Rai.

Open from 9am until 8pm every day.
