Baa Baa Black Cafe in Mae Rim is a relaxing retreat from the City
Best Coffee shop in Chiang Mai?
Sitting on the lounge chairs overlooking a large lagoon, the sun shining through the trees as the tweeting birds provided the soundtrack to our Friday afternoon. The young waitress sets down my cappuccino on the table next to me and smiles. The coffee scent wafts into my nostrils and I breathe out a peaceful sigh. This is nice, I look across to Jmayel who’s happily spooning the frothy foam and cream from the top of his ultimate indulgent hot chocolate into his mouth. We were at Baa Baa Black café in Mae Rim.
15km North from the old city, Baa Baa is a relaxing retreat, part of the Mae Rim Lagoon Hotel.
We first spotted the signs for this place when we discovered the Wawee Coffee shop next to the Four Seasons hotel, at which point we had at the top of our ‘Best cafes in Chiang Mai’ list, full up from our snacks and with no more need for coffee, we decided to return to the area to check out Baa Baa café another time.
We haven’t been back to the Wawee since as Baa Baa Black has taken precedent.
We’ve returned again and again to this lovely café, taken friends and family here and even spent a very nice Christmas Day enjoying what it has to offer.

The setting is fabulous, and you are encouraged to spend as long as you want lounging around the garden. There are a couple of rustic row boats which you can use for free on the lagoon and plenty of tables dotted around the grounds, that you can take your pick from.

If you don’t want to sit outside however, the air conditioned café is just as an enjoyable place to savor your order with large windows all around, so you can still take in the beautiful setting from indoors.
The menu offers a really nice selection of Thai food from the adjacent ‘Grandmas Kitchen’ restaurant, with the recipes coming from the owners Granny herself. I recommend the Penang curry, it is delicious!
There is also a choice of Western style food in the shape of sandwiches and fries, French toast and probably the best blueberry pancakes I have ever tasted.
As well as ‘proper’ food, there are fabulous homemade chunky cookies. The gingerbread is my particular favorite, as well as snickerdoodle, chocolate chip and oat and raisin. Yes, with my sweet tooth, I have almost tried them all!
As well as food, the drinks choice doesn’t stop at great coffees, flavored sodas, fresh fruit juices and smoothies are all very good and sometimes it’s hard to stop at choosing just one.
The owner has a gorgeous chocolate Labrador that is sometimes there which also means that the café is dog friendly.
Eden enjoys her days out at Baa Baa Black just as much as we do.
This is definitely our top choice of Café in Chiang Mai, we love it there.
How to find Baa Baa Black Café:
Head north out of Chiang Mai by joining the Canal ring road and heading toward the signs for Mae Rim. Ultimately you want to get on the Hwy 107 north which heads toward Mae Taeng and Pai. Once on this road continue driving for about 5km until you pass the large Macro store on the right hand side. After this you will pass under a footbridge. Not long after you will come to a set of traffic lights that are opposite an Ayudhya bank on the right (yellow coloured signs) and just past a 7-11 store on your left.
Turn left at these lights and keep driving for around 2kms until you see the sign for Mae Rim Lagoon on your left. There is also a ‘Baa Baa Black’ sign but the Lagoon is easier to spot while driving. Turn left and you will be met with a beautiful view of mountains and a large lake. Baa Baa Black can be found on these grounds.
